Boise, Idaho: Downtown Sights and Outdoor Adventures
Explore Boise and the Sunnyslope Wine Trail before hiking scenic trails, soaking in hot springs, and whitewater rafting in the Idaho wilderness. While Idaho has a reputation for fluffy and mouthwatering spuds, its capital serves as the ultimate basecamp for off-the-beaten-path culture and rugged wilderness. Sample authentic Basque tapas, browse eclectic boutiques, and wander quaint streets lined with historic architecture and colorful murals in downtown Boise. The welcoming atmosphere blends humble charm and modern amenities with a deep-rooted love for recreational fun.
Brad and I flew into Boise for a wedding weekend, but also budgeted time for a few excursions to properly explore the scenic landscapes of the Gem State. Consider extending your city getaway by renting a car to hike trails in the Sawtooth National Forest, sip glasses of award-winning wines along the Sunnyslope Wine Trail, and go whitewater rafting on the turbulent Payette River. Below I share our recommended highlights to help you plan a jam-packed visit!
Downtown
Kick off your morning with a hearty El Paso breakfast burrito with cheesy scrambled eggs, potatoes, crispy bacon, salsa, and sour cream at BACON. Locals flock to this casual bistro known for its country cooking, signature bacon tasting flight, and spicy Bloody Mary. If you're craving something sweet, follow the aroma of freshly brewed coffee around the corner to Guru Donuts. Munch on a vegan Hipsterberry yeast-raised donut for a delightful sugar buzz. The creative flavors change weekly and are made with locally sourced ingredients.
Admire the sandstone Neoclassical architecture and rustic vibe of downtown as you shop for one-of-a-kind souvenirs, vintage clothing, and records. Weave in between the tidy blocks surrounding 8th Street to find hipster cafés, al fresco restaurants, and energetic cocktail bars. The nearby Basque Block is a small avenue which preserves the ethnic heritage of immigrants from the Bay of Biscay region in southwestern France and northern Spain. Pop into The Basque Market to share a plate of pintxos (tapas) and pick up a bottle of wine before learning about local history and traditions at the Basque Museum and Cultural Center.
Take a stroll in the picturesque Julia Davis Park next to the glistening Boise River. Catch a glimpse of jovial tubers cooling off from the summer heat before resting your feet in the blooming Boise Rose Garden. Check out the insightful exhibitions at the Idaho State Museum, Boise Art Museum, and Idaho Black History Museum for a dose of culture. Work up an appetite and rent a bike at George's Cycles to cruise the Boise River Greenbelt, a scenic pathway winding through the heart of the city. The healthy poké bowls at Paddles Up Poké will surely wake up your taste buds for lunch!
Completed in 1912, the Idaho State Capitol features a sandstone façade and impressive rotunda with a marble sundial embedded on the first floor. A gilded bronze eagle perches atop the dome with open wings to symbolize freedom, strength, and grace. Dynamic bronze statues and monuments commemorating historic figures and events surround the manicured grounds outside. Get the most out of your visit by downloading a free brochure before beginning a self-guided tour. Opening hours are typically every day, 7:00 AM-7:00 PM.
Grab your camera and head to Freak Alley Gallery for a dazzling display of vibrant murals, bold graffiti, and poetic words of wisdom. Established in 2002, this outdoor canvas allows local artists to showcase their imagination while bringing new life to bare brick walls and plain doorways. Every visit guarantees something new to appreciate since the space is continuously evolving. These creative artworks are also fantastic backdrops for unique pictures. Keep an ear out for musicians who add a complementary soundtrack to the kaleidoscope of colors!
A popular dinner choice in downtown Boise is Fork, a farm-to-table restaurant serving flavorful American dishes and craft cocktails in a sophisticated atmosphere. Start with the lightly battered asparagus fries and ranch dipping sauce before savoring the tender rotisserie chicken with cheddar grits and baby carrots. The delicious food stands up to the hype! End your night with an indulgent scoop of strawberry shortcake ice cream at The STIL. For an unusual twist, try one of the boozy infusions or pair your dessert with a curated local beer or wine flight.
Whitewater Rafting
Ready for an adrenaline rush? Strap on a lifejacket and paddle along one of the most magnificent rivers in Idaho! Half-day, full-day, and multi-day whitewater rafting trips are possible from Boise with experienced guides. Brad and I joined some of the other wedding guests for a half-day outing with Payette River Company on the South Fork of the Payette River. We had a blast navigating the pulsing rapids next to the towering canyon walls. Luckily, nobody fell overboard during our refreshing jaunt in the epic wilderness!
Kirkham Hot Springs
Put on your swimsuit and relax in the geothermal pools of Kirkham Hot Springs on the Payette River. Bring some snacks, claim a spot, and melt your worries away with a memorable soak that will take your breath away! This turquoise oasis has magical waterfalls and rocky jacuzzis with temperatures reaching up to 120°F. Some of the hot springs can feel near scalding, so test each pool before completely submerging. Be careful around the slippery terrain and prepare for sunshine since there isn't any shade. Please take out what you take in and leave no trace, including biodegradable food which can harm the ecosystem.
Sunnyslope Wine Trail
Toast your trip in Boise with a splendid afternoon in the Snake River Valley! Drive around the Sunnyslope Wine Trail to visit several wineries tucked along rolling hills of grapevines and orchards. The volcanic soil, altitude, and climate blend together in perfect harmony for winemakers to develop their varietals. The region does particularly well in producing wines such as Riesling, Syrah, and Merlot. I highly recommend enjoying wine tasting flights at Sawtooth Winery, Koenig Vineyards, and Ste. Chapelle Winery. Cheers!
Sawtooth National Forest
If you have extra gas in the tank and a bit of determination, get an early start to hike beneath the jagged mountains of the pristine Sawtooth National Forest. Traverse the moderate 16.1 km (10 mi) out-and-back Iron Creek Stanley Lake Trail to Sawtooth Lake to smell fresh ponderosa pines, marvel at snow-capped peaks, and dip your feet into glacial water. The high altitude was challenging at times, but our impromptu snowball fight at the summit was a memory worth the effort.
Overall Experience
Boise is a booming city that packs a punch with diverse attractions to keep both residents and tourists busy. The friendly spirit of the capital has a laid-back attitude that invites everyone to explore at their own pace. Downtown is easy to cover in a day or two, which makes the accessible outdoor playground of the Sawtooth Range a seamless addition to any itinerary. I always assumed Idaho was full of rural towns sprinkled throughout vast farmland, but quickly realized my mistake once I discovered this beautiful and underrated destination in the United States for myself!
